The German Cancer Research Center is the largest biomedical research institution in Germany. With more than 2,100 employees, we operate an extensive scientific program in the field of cancer research.

The Division of Cell cycle control and carcinogenesis (Kst. F045) is seeking a

Doktorand (m/w)/PhD Student
(Ref-No. 123/2010)

The post is part of a project aimed at unraveling the question on how too many centrosomes can lead to aneuploidy, a hallmark of many cancer cells. The centrosome plays a fundamental role in the assembly of the mitotic spindle during mitosis. Having the correct number of centrosomes is crucial for proper chromosome segregation during cell division and for the prevention of aneuploidy. Errors in centrosome duplication lead to cells with too many centrosomes. Interestingly, cancer cells have developed a mechanism to undergo biopolar cell division despite an erroneous number of centrosomes by clustering the centrosomes at their spindle poles.
The aim of the PhD project is to unravel the mechanism of centrosomal clustering with emphasis on the role of a protein kinase, Plk4 in this process.
Modern cell biological techniques including life cell imaging and high resolution confocal laser scanning microscopy as well as biochemical techniques will be used.
